Course Schedules
STUDENT PROGRAM
The Student Program is open to guitar, violin, viola, and cello students of all levels. There are many types of classes offered at the Institute.
The general schedule is available on the right-hand side of this page. Individual student schedules will not be available until registration on Saturday, June 23rd. Families who have more than one child attending should consider the schedule, as it is impossible to avoid conflicts in sibling’s class times. Every effort is made to schedule the lesson classes at different hours, however the other classes may be taking place at the same hour. Depending on the age of the children, it may be necessary to have an additional adult present during Institute. For more information on the types of classes each student will have, please see the descriptions of class types on this page.
Classes
Lesson Class: The “Lesson” class is an opportunity to work individually with the teacher. Students will be scheduled in groups of 3 or 4 in an hour. Please come prepared to play a polished piece for the teacher.
Technique Class: The “Technique” class focuses on specific level-appropriate techniques on the instrument. It is an opportunity for students to review technique in a more relaxed, social atmosphere.
Repertoire Class: The “Repertoire” class focuses on review of repertoire. Rehearsal techniques and ensemble skills are polished in preparation for the final concert on Friday afternoon.
Chamber Music Class: This class is open to students in book 6 and above, who may elect chamber music instead of repertoire class. It is an opportunity to expand their repertoire beyond the Suzuki books. Students will be placed in small groups of two, three, or four depending on class enrollment. Each group will work with a faculty member for coaching and independently for practice together.
Orchestra Class (Bk 2+) There will be 2 ASI orchestras, ranging from first experience orchestra to an advanced level orchestra. These orchestras provide a large group experience which encourages sightreading, ensemble, and rhythmic skills. Students will be placed in orchestra based on book level and orchestral experience.
Eurhythmics: Meaning “good rhythm”, eurhythmics classes teach rhythmic coordination between the eye, ear, mind and body. The classes teach fundamentals of rhythm, pitch, and phrasing, and children develop physical coordination while solving musical problems. Eurhythmics is included for all guitar students and violin, viola, cello book 1 students in place of orchestra as well as book 6+ students. It is available to students in books 2-5 as an elective.
All participants will be scheduled daily for 4 or 5 hours of class, depending upon the level. Here is what a class list may look like for each of the levels:

The student program is a family experience. For young children, it is ideal to have one adult for each child enrolled. A parent or responsible adult must accompany students and work with them throughout the week. In order to get the complete institute experience, it is recommended that families make the commitment to be available for the many activities that occur throughout the day.
Review List
Please review all pieces at your level and below. ASI faculty will choose pieces from this list to work on in repertoire and technique classes. Please note, however, that each repertoire class will perform separately on the final concert.

Bluegrass and Irish Fiddling: These classes will be offered during the 4:30 hour and will each be 2 days long. You may choose to take Bluegrass or Irish only, or you may choose to take both courses. It is recommended that students be at least on Perpetual Motion to enroll in these classes.
Family Chorus: This will be a time for the entire family to sing together. Join in the fun and plan to attend the rehearsals on Saturday, June 23rd and Sunday, June 24th to get a good start with the family chorus music. There will be a small fee of $5.00 per family to cover music and expenses. Please indicate on your registration form if you are interested in participating in the chorus to sing or to take part in the choreography.
Eurhythmics: Students who will not be automatically scheduled for eurhythmics (see student program notes above) may elect eurhythmics (meaning “good rhythm”) in addition to their lesson classes and orchestra. The classes teach fundamentals of rhythm, pitch, and phrasing, and children develop physical coordination while solving musical problems. The classes encourage concentration in mind and body. The fee for this course is $60 for the week.
Faculty lectures: Faculty lectures are scheduled each day of the institute at the 4:30 hour. These lectures cover topics such as Suzuki philosophy, parent-child interaction, and practicing methods. The lectures are free and open to all parents and teachers.
Institute Store: The institute store will be open during most class times during institute week. There will be many supplies available at the store including Suzuki books, stands, sheet music, pencils, reference books, games and more!
Final Concert
Every Institute participant will have the opportunity to participate in the Final Concert on Friday afternoon, where institute repertoire classes will perform. Friends and family are invited to attend this gala finale. Also, the institute orchestras and family chorus will perform on Thursday afternoon at 4:30.

These courses will be offered in accordance with Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA) guidelines. A course may be taken as a participant or as an auditor. Participants will play the material studied in class and may register the course with the SAA. Auditors may play in class only with the permission of the instructor and may not register the course with the SAA. The tuition fee is the same for both categories registration. Students 18 years or younger will be registered as auditors with no exceptions. The SAA requires that courses through Book 2 must be taken in order, and that all attendees, regardless of status, be members of the SAA.
Every Child Can! (ECC) is an introduction to Dr. Suzuki’s philosophy and its application to Suzuki education. For parents, teachers, prospective teachers and others, this course provides an inspiring, in-depth look at the Suzuki approach to teaching and learning. For teachers, ECC serves as the first course in the Suzuki Association of the Americas’ Teacher Development Program. In addition to exploring the elements of the Suzuki approach and its far-reaching goals, it includes an introduction to learning styles, history of the development of Suzuki education, the role of the parents, the importance of Suzuki pedagogical training, and an overview of the SAA’s role in supporting teachers and parents. A fast-paced, engaging and inspiring program, ECC includes video materials and SAA-developed courseware, and provides each participant with useful reference materials (manuals) for later study. This is course is the required prerequisite for any training. Teachers planning to take Violin or Guitar Book 1 at the 2012 ASI will need to take this course.
Course Requirements
All workshop participants are asked to prepare the repertoire to be studied to the point of fluent performance. Memorization is not required but is recommended. Additionally, participants should be conversant with the ideas presented in Dr. Suzuki’s Nurtured By Love.
All participants will be performing in class and are expected to provide their own instruments. It is recommended that participants bring a tape recorder and a notebook to all sessions. 100% attendance is required for registering the course.
Videotape Audition Process
Cello Book 4; Guitar Book 1; Violin Book 1, 2 , 3 and 4
To qualify as a participant in training courses rather than an auditor, applicants must submit a videotape audition of specified repertoire to the SAA, preferably prior to enrollment. Tapes should be submitted at least 8 weeks prior to the course start date, with the required fees and a completed application form. If submitted later than 8 weeks before the course start date, audition results determining participant eligibility may not be available prior to the course and will require late audition fees. For courses occurring during summer 2012, applicants submitting tapes later than March 31, 2012 may not receive audition results prior to the course, even if meeting the above deadlines. Applicant may enroll late as “tape pending”, but will incur audition late fees, and audition results determining eligibility for participant credit will probably not be available until after the course. If auditions from “tape pending” applicants are not accepted, their course work willnot be eligible retroactively for SAA credit registration as a participant, only as an auditor-even if course work was completed. For further information, please see the SAA website at www.suzukiassociation.org, in the teacher section under training, the downloadable video audition form (with instructions); or call the SAA toll free at 888-378-9854 for this form.
