What is a Suzuki Institute?

A Suzuki Institute is an opportunity for parents, children and teachers to benefit from five days of focused attention on instrument study and the application of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki’s principles of Talent Education.  In the environment of the     Institute, children and parents alike receive fresh inspiration from faculty and peers.  Children are nurtured through daily master classes, during which each student receives some focused attention from an expert teacher, group lessons, ensemble experiences, performances and related musical enrichments.  Parents have the opportunity to share insights and learn from each other through  discussion sessions with experienced Suzuki teachers and through observation of children’s lessons and classes.  Teachers have the opportunity to receive  Suzuki Association of the Americas-approved training in the principles and   methods of Dr. Suzuki and to observe others at work.

Together, in the environment of the Institute, everyone gains insight and  inspiration into the wonders of music and our children.

The institute experience can be one of the most motivating experiences in your or your child's musical life. In order to get the most out of it, plan to attend as many institute offerings as possible. Your individual class schedule will tell you where and when each of your classes takes place. Each student is scheduled for a Semi-Private lesson, a small group Technique class and a large group Repertoire class each day. Additionally, each student has been assigned an enrichment class. The enrichment classes include Music and Movement, and orchestra. Orchestra placement is based on book level and reading and sight-reading levels.

Everyone should plan to attend the daily recital. This is the only time each day that we can gather together for announcements. Plus, you will hear some great music by your teachers, friends and special guests!

The facilities at Roswell Presbyterian Church are available for your use and enjoyment. Please remember that we are guests and must treat these facilities with respect and care. As the Atlanta Suzuki Institute is a family experience, parents or guardians are expected to remain with their children during meals and leisure time, as well as during classes. Parents are responsible for the conduct and safety of their children and other valuables while attending the Institute. Physical activities such as running, ball throwing, skating etc., are not permitted in the buildings at any time.

The Atlanta Suzuki Institute is a not for profit corporation incorporated under the laws of the State of Georgia. The Institute is dedicated to providing the highest standards of Suzuki Teacher Training and workshop teaching for students and teachers in the Metropolitan Atlanta Region. The Institute is approved by the Suzuki Association of the Americas and follows the guidelines and requirements of the S.A.A. All Teacher Workshop courses are taught by registered Teacher Trainers of the S.A.A.

The Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA) is a coalition of teachers, parents, educators, and others who are interested in making music education available to all children. The SAA provides programs and services to members throughout North and South America. With the International Suzuki Association (ISA) and other regional associations, the SAA promotes and supports the spread of Dr. Suzuki's Talent Education. Membership in the SAA includes receipt of the American Suzuki Journal, a quarterly publication with stimulating ideas and information for teachers, parents, and others. The Journal includes regular columns with specific ideas for teaching particular instruments and for parenting in the Suzuki context. Membership also includes use of the Teacher Referral Service for parents and programs seeking teachers. Additional benefits include support, assistance and networking for regional organizations of parents and/or teachers, and access to a library of audio and video tapes, research information, etc.
